Osaka shocks Venus in Hong Kong

VICTORIA PARK, Hong Kong – 19-year-old Naomi Osaka pulled off a straight-sets shock against second seed Venus Williams at the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, winning 7-5, 6-2.

The American had been victorious in their match at Wimbledon earlier in the summer, but her younger opponent was vastly impressive as she sought some measure of revenge.

“”I feel like even if I hit one semi-short ball she would come in and crush it, so I had to play really well,” said Osaka afterwards.

This win was the best of Osaka’s career in terms of rankings, beating the World No.5 after her triumph against World No.6 Angelique Kerber at the US Open last month.

Osaka’s double-fault handed Williams the first break of the match, and the 37-year-old looked to be cruising to the first set on her own comfortable serve.

But the teenager got herself three break points as Williams attempted to serve out the set, leveling the score to 5-5 with a brilliant return.

Then after holding serve she ramped up the pressure on Williams, breaking her once more to take the set 7-5.
