Warriors survive Blazers’ best punch and render it unworthy in Game 1 win

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Portland Trail Blazers lost Game 1 of their first-round series to the top-seeded Golden State Warriors, but in the process found a winning recipe: have Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum combine for 75 points on 51.8 percent shooting.  Unfortunately for Portland (and every other playoff team, all of whom would love to see the Warriors begin their summer vacation a month early), it’s just not a sustainable strategy. After letting the top-heavy Blazers hang around for three quarters, the Warriors blitzed them in the final quarter, using a total team effort to stymie the Blazers, turning a close game into a …

North Carolina destroys Virginia and looks like a contender despite NCAA cloud

North Carolina played in last season’s national title game. Then the Tar Heels lost two starters — namely Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige. And now they’re better? Perhaps. Either way, they sure looked it Saturday night while cruising to a 65-41 — 65-41! — victory over Virginia inside the Dean Smith Center. The Cavaliers entered ranked third at KenPom. They exited with a 24-point loss. So now the Tar Heels are 23-5 overall, 11-3 in the ACC and alone atop the league standings. Alone atop the league standings. And is Roy Williams proving his Hall of Fame induction is legit or is Roy Williams proving his Hall of Fame induction is legit? The 66-year-old two-time national champion has operated under an NCAA cloud for what feels like …

After an exhaustive review, officials ruled that a potential tying 3-pointer by Terrence Ross did not count.
